CNPC Showcases CRG Innovation Milestones at CERAWeek 2025

The 43rd edition of CERAWeek 2025 was held in Houston, Texas, under the theme “Moving Ahead: Energy Strategies for a Complex World.” The globally renowned event brought together over 10,000 delegates from 80+ countries and more than 2,000 companies, including a high-level delegation from China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC).

CNPC’s 15-member delegation actively participated in plenary discussions, parallel sessions, and key dialogue forums. They notably contributed to the “China’s Energy Future” strategic roundtable and the “Attracting Investment for Oil and Gas” session, showcasing the company’s ongoing efforts in sustainable development and global energy transition.

At the “China’s Energy Future” roundtable, CNPC introduced groundbreaking geological theories and achievements in the exploration and production of coal-rock gas (CRG). Described as a new form of unconventional natural gas, CRG was presented as a potential strategic alternative following the Shale Revolution. The concept received widespread acclaim, with Daniel Yergin, Vice Chairman of S&P Global, praising its global significance and transformative potential.

In the Attracting Investment for Oil and Gas session, CNPC reinforced its long-standing commitment to open collaboration and comprehensive industry partnerships. The company emphasized its growing cooperation with leading global energy firms and national oil companies, fostering win-win outcomes across the full value chain. Looking forward, CNPC plans to further deepen international collaboration, enhance both conventional and unconventional E&P, and accelerate innovation in clean energy, hydrogen, geothermal energy, CCS/CCUS, refining, chemicals, and advanced materials.

In addition to CERAWeek forums, CNPC also participated in the Asian and Pacific Energy Forum (ESCAP) and delivered a keynote at the session titled China: Approaching Peak Emissions for Global Climate Action. The delegation also visited ExxonMobil’s upstream research center and engaged in high-level talks with S&P Global executives to discuss market trends, tech innovation, and partnership opportunities.

Hosted by S&P Global, CERAWeek remains a premier platform driving global dialogue on innovation, technology, and sustainable energy solutions. CNPC’s active role at this year’s summit underscores its dedication to pioneering energy transformation and contributing to a low-carbon global future.
