Latest AI Developments Oil and Gas Companies Should Know
Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to reshape industries, and the oil and gas sector is no exception. Rigzone recently discussed this topic with Toni Fadnes, Chief Transformation Officer (CTO) at eDrilling, a technology company focusing on AI solutions for sustainable energy transformation.
According to Fadnes, Agentic AI is set to play a pivotal role in the industry’s evolution. Building upon earlier tech waves such as PCs and SaaS, Agentic AI systems capable of advanced reasoning and autonomous task execution is already redefining operational workflows.
Fadnes describes Agentic AI as “AI-powered engineers” capable of performing complex, goal-oriented tasks with minimal supervision. These systems incorporate human input via multi-modal interfaces, dynamically adapt to real-time changes, and make decisions based on contextual data, boosting overall productivity.
He stresses the urgency of adopting AI solutions now, highlighting two major benefits:
- Immediate Value: AI-powered engineers quickly address the long-standing data management challenges engineers face, allowing human engineers to focus fully on core tasks.
- Building Trust for the Future: Early adoption enables organizations to gradually develop trust in AI systems, preparing them for even more complex operations over time.
At eDrilling, three AI-powered engineers have been developed:
- Ida: Focused on drilling operations.
- Nora: Specialized in well design and planning.
- Marie: An Agentic AI system for data management, responsible for automating data exchanges, workflow consolidation, and reporting.
Fadnes emphasizes that deploying AI today is crucial for companies aiming to remain competitive and accelerate their journey toward digital transformation and a lower-carbon future.
